The Managing Counsel – Asia Pacific AutoLubes will enable the AutoLubes Asia & Pacific business to tap into the law as a resource for the business’ sustainable competitive advantage. The Managing Counsel will proactively manage the legal needs of the business to include risk and opportunities management.

The role will work closely with the AutoLubes Asia & Pacific leadership team to gain a deep understanding of the Lubricants business and to enable them to play an active role in the business’ drive to develop and execute legally compliant and commercially savvy business strategies. To do so, and to drive consistently high quality standards in the Legal Teams outputs across Global Lubes Legal around the world, the Managing Counsel will also work closely with the Global Lubricant Legal Management Team, its individual members and their counterparts in other Legal Teams within Refining & Marketing.

Key accountabilities
Reporting to the Lubricants Managing Attorney based in the United Kingdom, the role of the Managing Counsel – Asia Pacific AutoLubes will be based in Singapore and will be a key advisor to the Asia & Pacific AutoLubes Leadership Team and will be responsible for managing, leading and developing lawyers and support staff for the Asia & Pacific AutoLubes business, including Legal staff members in Singapore, Mumbai, India, Dubai, UAE and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Responsibilities will include:

• Provide strategic, commercially focussed legal advice to the Asia & Pacific AutoLubes Leadership Team on key legal issues

• Develop strong working relationships with the Asia & Pacific AutoLubes Leadership Team and the respective teams reporting to the members of that Leadership Team

• Provide strategic legal advice and management counsel to key decision makers in Asia Pacific and the Middle East and proactively manage disputes to constructive resolution; managing litigation, and providing day to day legal advice to clients across the business

• Develop strong working relationships with clients beyond active legal matters

• Lead, coach and drive forward the personal and professional development of the AutoLubes Asia & Pacific Legal team, be accountable for the team’s legal advice and the advice provided by specialist lawyers on all relevant legal issues affecting the AutoLubes Asia & Pacific business

• Work closely with other Lubricants Legal Managers including Managing Counsels for other AutoLubes businesses, Managing Counsel AIME, Managing Counsels for Lubricant functions such as Global Supply Chain, Global Marketing Unit and Global Lubes Technology to enable local implementation of their initiatives to drive consistently high quality standards across the team, to develop common standards and processes that enable efficient and effective service provision by the Global Lubes Legal Team

• Collaborate effectively with and provide guidance to other R&M (and other BP) and specialist lawyers tagged to the Lubes business around the globe

• Work effectively with Ethics & Compliance to give effect to BP’s drive for the highest standards of compliance

• Select, instruct and manage suitable external legal counsel

• Prepare and manage the budget of USm for internal and external legal costs and be accountable for the rigorous management of legal costs

• Ensure the AutoLubes Asia & Pacific Legal Team provide consistent, business focussed legal advice and management counsel

• Identify gaps in the advice provided by the AutoLubes Asia & Pacific legal team and provide solutions

• Identify any gaps that need additional people resource, develop a clear business case to recruit additional resource, conduct the recruitment, and successfully onboard additional team members

• Embed a culture of compliance with BP’s Code of Conduct, Anti-Bribery & Corruption and competition law within the AutoLubes Asia & Pacific legal team and be instrumental in driving a culture of compliance at all levels across the AutoLubes Asia & Pacific business

• Ensure compliance with the laws and regulations in a complex regulatory environment

Essential Education
Qualified to practice law in the region to include LL.B/LL.M. (Bachelors / Masters Degree in Law)

Essential experience and job requirements
• Proven track record as a Solicitor / Advocate with experience of working as a senior lawyer within an in-house environment

• Sound competition/antitrust law knowledge and experience in leading compliance programmes

• International distribution and agency agreements

• Significant client counselling, negotiation experience and highly developed influencing skills

• A proven record of commercial awareness with high-quality contribution to business strategy and delivery

• Proven track record as an effective and passionate team player within high performing cross-functional teams

• Ability to contribute to the development of BP Legal within region and to the legal strategy commitment to helping promote and maintain a safe workplace

• Excellent communication and analytical skills in both written and spoken English

• The ability to self-motivate and motivate others to deliver under pressure

• Ability to lead and further develop a high calibre legal team

• Ability to network with BP staff and management at all levels to advise on legal aspects of operations and transactions

• Possess the highest professional and ethical standards

• High degree of cultural sensitivity and a demonstrated openness to fully embrace and derive benefit for the organisation and its people from cognitive diversity

• Experience of working in a highly matrixed environment
