Asian Legal Business, a business of Thomson Reuters is seeking its first Executive Managing Editor to be responsible for the overall editorial quality, team and direction for a growing business which currently includes five magazines published across Asia Pacific (ALB) and one in the Middle East (The Brief). ALB and The Brief provide news and insight to give our readers the information they need to make intelligent business-of-law decisions. ALB and The Brief add a critical dimension to the Thomson Reuters strategy to expand its legal market footprint in the Asian and Middle East region, and to become more relevant, more often to more types of legal professionals.

We are looking for a candidate with the following attributes:
* Strong news judgment. Is able to decide where to deploy resources. Leads from the front and is a sound news planner who listens to and generates excellent ideas for agenda-setting stories.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:

The Executive Managing Editor is responsible for the overall quality and content for ALB and The Brief. As such, the Executive Managing Editor will need a keen sense of the readership and how, when and why they rely on the publications to accomplish their business-of-law objectives. The Executive Managing Editor sets the journalistic standards and provides a vision for the rest of the editorial staff. S/he is responsible for supervising the editorial staff and administering the day-to-day editorial operations across all publications. S/he is able to handle a big-picture project, taking it from conception to completion in a process that involves all relevant stakeholders and yields significant benefit.

KEY ACOUNTABILITIES

Manage the publications
* In charge of and responsible for the production of the monthly magazines and all other products that are published under the same brand.
* Set and maintain a standard of excellence that will grow the brand.
* Assure clear messaging and consistent quality of magazine and new media (web, mobile, etc.).
* Meet regularly with staff editors and freelancers to develop content and professional skill building.
* Manage the quality and efficiency of the editorial process (from story ideas to delivering on deadline).
* Chair all editorial meetings, plan the monthly magazine and direct coverage by generating story ideas, ensuring the right angles are pursued and providing direction/leadership for the regional editors and journalists.
* Final sign-off of all editorial copy after editing by copy-editor and regional editor.
* Manage overall relationship with third-party content contributors
* Oversee expenses of editorial operations.
People Management
* Champion the selection and development of talented editorial employees who reflect the communities we serve.
* Work to develop staff into multi-media content creators and magazine ambassadors in the community.
* Support organizational excellence and ensure OPM reviews conducted for all editorial staff and appropriate performance standards are met and appropriate feedback given.
* Ensure sufficient editorial resource is available to achieve output including recruitment and training of new journalists.
* Encourage Journalists to research and write relevant, insightful and valuable articles.
Industry Knowledge
* Articulate competitor strategy & content.
* Remain current with content in competitor publications.
* Keep in close touch with the internal businesses, and conduct regular client visits.
Strategic
* Ensure the development and evolution of the strategic vision for editorial content and design across multiple media (print magazine and digital).
* Create an innovation and planning process which leverages our knowledge of the market, talents of the staff, and communication/engagement vehicles (print magazine; digital - web, newsletter, mobile; social media; events, etc.).
* Chief liaison to Reuters News responsible for fostering and overseeing a collaborative relationship whereby ALB and Reuters are developing story leads, sharing sources, sharing content and co-newsplanning (including attending and contributing to the daily Reuters newsplanner).
* Plan and organize editorial events to increase reader/community understanding and engagement.
* Facilitate understanding of Editorial across the company and within the community, including but not limited to on-going education of non-Editorial executives.


* Bachelor's or advanced degree in journalism, Communication Arts or equivalent related experience.
* Experience as an editor or senior editorial manager (preferably at a magazine).
* Expert knowledge of editorial operations, magazine traditions, journalistic values, understanding of marketing and capacity to plan and implement competitive business strategy.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly in communications and diplomacy.
* Strong writing, editing and interviewing skills.
* Ability to write everything from spot news through to longer in-depth news and analysis stories
* Native-level English writing and speaking fluency.
* Mandarin speaking and reading highly regarded but not required.
* Ability and interest to travel throughout Asia, Pacific and the Middle East.
